Top 5 Home Renovations You Can Handle Yourself!

There are some renovations that are best left to professionals but there are others that most people, with a little bit of focus, and hard work, can handle alone.

When deciding whether you can handle a project, ask yourself what time you are willing to invest in the project, whether the project could be dangerous for you to do it yourself and what are the consequences if you mess up the project.

Here are our Top 5 DIY projects that most people should be able to handle themselves.

#1 Paint or Wall Paper

Painting or papering your walls is the first thing most people think of when they think of doing things themselves.

It is a tedious process (especially if painting the entire house) but it is hugely gratifying as it makes such a huge difference in your space. Though painting and papering walls is something people have done for a long time, in this age, you can improve our technique and get tips by watching videos and reading how to blogs.

Paint or paper? We recommend doing a focal wall in paper and painting the rest of the room in a complimentary or matching color.

#2 beaded board

Adding beaded board can really add farmhouse charm to your space. We love this look on kitchen islands and back splashes, stair risers and in bathrooms. The most difficult part of this project will be cutting it the right size and making the appropriate holes for electrical panels.

A simple hack that looks great is to use a paintable textured wall paper in a beaded board pattern. Another great use of this textured wall paper is to re-cover old faux-wood-grain sliding closet doors!

#3  Update your hardware

Cabinet knobs and pull handles are extremely easy to replace and can make a huge impact on the look of your space, You could also look into replacing or spray painting old brass-coloured door knobs throughout your house.

#4 Redo your back splash

There are many innovative ways for you to update a kitchen back splash. Simple fixes include painting out an old one using enamel paint, using beaded board or a textured wallpaper, or using faux-tin panels. However even a traditional tile fixture is a relatively simple weekend project for you to handle.

#5 Update your light fixtures

The right light fixtures will update your space's overall look and provide you with better lighting, so this is technically a double update. Lighting can make or break your space's atmosphere.
